Golfing Can Be Good For Your Wellbeing
In a world where stress and anxiety seem to be constant companions, finding moments of peace and relaxation is crucial for our mental wellbeing. Mine is golfing (just look at the courses I get to play on, picture below), it’s my go-to activity that offers a unique escape from the pressures of everyday life and work. It’s also a self-challenge to get better, sadly my handicap has stayed around the 18 mark for a few years now.
Yes, I know it can be a frustrating game at times when you slice your first drive or chunk your second shot after piping your drive down the middle. But, more important is that you are not at your desk or in the office, you are outside amongst nature and friends, with greenery and hopefully blue sky and a bit of sun all around you and maybe a great view or two.
As you step onto the lush green fairways and breathe in the fresh air, you’ll soon discover how tee time can become your time to unwind and rejuvenate. Let me show you how I use the mental health benefits of golfing and the calming effects of spending time on the course with friends. The Mental Health Benefits of Golfing
As you navigate the course, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and work, you’ll find yourself immersed in a serene outdoor environment that should encourage a sense of calm and tranquillity. Even if your golf game is letting you down (which mine constantly does), it’s about having the right mindset and getting some exercise.

The Calming Effects of Spending Time on the Course
As you focus on your swing and the beauty of the green surroundings and views, the stresses of the outside world seem to melt away, it may take a few holes to fully unwind, but you get there eventually. The overzealous swing of the club, the satisfying ping of golf club on ball, and the fresh air all hopefully work in harmony to create a sense of accomplishment and relaxation.
Even if you don’t always hit the ball as you would like or want to throw your club in the nearest water hazard, remember you are not at work and you are hanging out with mates, giving each other grief over that last hook shot.
Spending time on the golf course allows you to be fully present in the moment, it’s all on you to try to hit that little white ball down the middle of the fairway or nail your approach shot. This golfing mental escape can have a profound impact on your overall wellbeing, leading to lower life stress levels (maybe higher golf stress) and a clearer mind.
Your golf game may be causing you a great deal of stress if you are slicing your drives or 3-putting most greens, but it’s all about the next shot or hole where you can turn your game around, get a birdie or even a hole in one. That’s what keeps me playing golf and the social side of it.

Improving Overall Wellbeing Through Golf
Playing a round of golf (18 or 9 holes) not only provides work stress relief but also contributes to improving my overall wellbeing. The combination of physical activity, fresh air, and mental focus that comes with playing a few holes can have a positive impact on both your body and mind. The camaraderie of playing with mates, playing an ambrose tournament or even the solitude of a solo round can add another layer of enjoyment and fulfilment to the experience.
By incorporating golf into your routine, you can reap the benefits of improved mental clarity, reduced life stress, and a greater sense of wellbeing. Taking care of yourself through activities like golf can lead to a happier, healthier life and a great way to catch up with friends over a shared passion.

1. Positive attitude and an open mind.
First and foremost, it’s essential to arrive at the course (in plenty of time) with a positive attitude and an open mind. Approach each shot with focus and determination, but also remember to have fun and enjoy the process. Golf is a game of skill and resilience, so be patient with yourself as you work on improving your game or hit an awful shot. It’s the next shot that counts.
2. Being prepared
Secondly, make sure you are properly equipped for a day on the course. This includes having the right clubs, plenty of golf balls, tees, and any other necessary accessories, like a good golf umbrella (click link to purchase) and a waterproof jacket (click link to purchase). Being prepared and golf-ready will help you stay focused on your game and avoid unnecessary distractions, especially if rain is forecasted. I don’t like carrying my clubs so regularly use a cart on most rounds.

3. Stretching and practising
Additionally, take the time to warm up before you start playing. Stretching and practising a few swings at the driving range or putts on the practice green can help you loosen up your muscles and get into the right mindset for the round ahead. By starting off on the right foot, you can hopefully set yourself up for a more enjoyable and successful game where you can at least hit a good tee shot on the 1st tee (and get it past the forward tees).

4. Stay fueled and hydrated
Lastly, don’t forget to stay hydrated and fuel your body with healthy snacks throughout your round, and maybe a few beers (course allowing). Proper nutrition and hydration can help you maintain your energy levels and focus, allowing you to play your best game possible. By taking care of yourself both physically and mentally, you can fully embrace the benefits of golfing and that long walk.

In a world that never seems to slow down, finding moments to unwind and destress is crucial for our mental health. Golfing may just be the unexpected solution you’ve been searching for, it is for me. Not only does hitting the course offer a break from the chaos of everyday life, but it also brings a sense of calm and improved wellbeing.
